Summer 2005 Scrapbook
2005 DINOSAUR LAB INTERNSHIP

Written by: Charlita, Manny and Alice

This summer, three students interned at Dr. Paul Sereno’s Dinosaur Lab at the University of Chicago. The internship ran for six weeks, from July 18 until August 26, 2005. As interns, they learned how to prepare a 65-million-year-old Edmontosaurus fossil. Edmontosaurus was a plant-eating hadrosaur that lived during the Cretaceous period. The students worked with a variety of tools and learned special techniques. They were able to observe the professional preparators and the work needed to place these fossils into museums all over the world.

The three high school graduates selected were Alice, Manny, and Charlita. Alice graduated from Whitney Young High School and will be attending the University of Chicago. She loves studying dinosaurs and pre-historic sea creatures. Manny graduated from Lane Tech High School and will be attending Northeastern University. He will major in anthropology and minor in geology, in the hopes of becoming an archeologist. Charlita graduated from Senn High School and will be attending Northern Michigan University in the fall. She loves the paleo world and wants to venture further into the field. All three students have participated in numerous Project Exploration programs such as Junior Paleontologists, Science Giants, and Summer Science.
